Meeting Planner Tip: On Speaker Introductions

April 20, 2009

We met recently with a client who wanted advice on the best ways to introduce their speaker at the event. Here's some tips:

Once you've chosen an introducer who is confident and can help set the tone of the presentation, ensure they know the correct pronunciation of the speaker's name, and advise they keep it brief (1-2 minutes) and keep it simple:
- "Share appreciation for the opportunity to introduce the speaker.
- "Establish the speaker's authority/profile based on experience from their bio.
- "Feature the experience they have that is relevant to your theme/topic/industry.
- "Invite the audience to join you in welcoming him/her to the stage to speak on the topic at hand."

Smile, encourage welcoming applause, and avoid jokes, overhyping the speaker or adlibbing with much of your own experience, and it will open the door to a great presentation!
