The Five Traits of Champions

June 7, 2010

Mark TewksburyRecently, Canadian Olympic champion and humanitarian, Mark Tewksbury gave a closing keynote speech at the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE) AGM, in Toronto. From this presentation, Tewksbury has summarized five specific key traits of champions and how they apply to CSAE. Pick one of the challenges you'd like to focus on for 2010 and book Tewksbury today!

Trait One: Embody Values
Know yourself. Your values act as a compass, guiding your decision making, showing people who you are. The Canadian Society of Association Executives has a strong reputation built on a statement of values and a code of conduct. These are words to live by.
CHALLENGE: How are YOU embodying the values of CSAE?  How is your personal code of conduct enhancing the professionalism of your industry?

Trait Two: Create Synergy
By bringing together the right people, an inexplicable energy is created that is greater than any one individual's contribution. The association industry is built upon relationships.  How are you going to maximize that to get better results in 2010?
CHALLENGE: Who is your relay team? The minimum three people that you can partner with to get that crazy ROI where 1+1+1+1 = 18?

Trait Three: Influence Wisely
Recognize your impact.  Generously share your wisdom, knowledge and experience with others. Whether it is peer to peer, association to association, or one generation to the next, we all have influence.  How are you using it? By sharing your experience there is an opportunity for others to benefit, and ultimately create a win for yourself.
CHALLENGE: What is the idea or experience you might take for granted, that to someone else is a great learning experience that will bring great benefits? Share it!

Trait Four: Continually Evolve
By creating a dynamic environment where the bar is constantly being raised, excellence is fostered and winning results happen. Evolution requires an environment where decisions are made in good time - not always waiting. Growth can be uncomfortable, but the other option is to become obsolete.
CHALLENGE: What is the one thing you'll take away from here that makes you slightly uncomfortable but will ultimately enable you to raise the bar and get excellent results?

Trait Five: Generate Enthusiasm
Since we rarely achieve anything alone, by sharing your passion and excitement you invite others to be a part of the journey.  The bottom line here: what is it that makes you excited about what you do? How are you sharing it with others?
CHALLENGE: Take a few minutes to consider what it is about the association business that you love. How are you communicating that with others? If you aren't sharing that excitement, then who will?
